Introduction of China-Ghana Relations

China and Ghana established diplomatic relations on 5th July 1960. The founding fathers of the two new-born republics laid a solid cornerstone for the development of the bilateral ties. In recent years, fruitful achievements have been made in various fields of bilateral cooperation, especially under the framework of China-Africa Cooperation Forum.

China takes the unity and cooperation with developing countries as the basis of its foreign policy and attaches great importance to all-round friendly and cooperative relations with them. China actively seeks mutually complementary economic, trade, and sci-tech cooperation channels, enhances consultation and cooperation with them on international issues, and jointly defends the rights and interests of developing countries. In this spirit, China has provided economic assistance to Ghana within its capacity and made vigorous efforts to promote the development of cooperation between the two countries.

For instance, the Chinese Government assisted Ghanaians in the construction of the National Theater, the Afefi Irrigation Project, the Dangme East District Hospital, the Teshie General Hospital, the Police and Military Barracks, the Ofankor-Nsawam stretch of the Accra-Kumasi Road, the Kumasi Youth Centre, the Office Block of Ministry of Defence, several rural basic schools, the Complex of Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration. The newest projects granted by the Chinese Government such as the Sports Complex in Cape Coast, the campus of the University of Health and Allied Sciences in Ho and the New Century Career training Institute Expansion Project in Accra started in 2013 while those supported and contracted by the Chinese side such as Bui Hydro-electric Dam, Kpong Water Supply Expansion Project, Atuabo Gas Project are all in full progress.

China-Ghana cooperation on economy and trade have increased significantly with the bilateral trading volume registered $5.434 billion and the number of newly registered Chinese investment projects topped Ghana's FDI list in 2012. The Sunon Asogli Power Plant invested by China-Africa Development Fund and Shenzhen Energy Group has been combined to the national grid of Ghana in 2011 and now accounts for around 14% of Ghana's electricity generation. Exchanges and cooperation in the fields of culture, education and medical health have also been frequent. The Chinese Government granted 111 scholarships to the Ghanaian students in 2013-2014 academic year. Training courses and seminars of diverse forms have benefited more than 500 Ghanaians from various fields in 2012. The distance learning project at the University of Ghana winning the appreciation and acclamation of the Ghanaian users is undergoing the phase Ⅱ expansion. The Chinese side has also initiated Chinese Ambassador Scholarship Program in several well-known Ghanaian universities in 2012 and inaugurated the first Confucius Institute in Ghana in May 2013. The two consecutive medical teams dispatched by the Chinese Government have relieved lots of patients of illness and donated several batches of sophisticated medical equipments to the local hospital, which won them a good fame.
