On 30 June 2017, Chinese Ambassador to Ghana H.E. Mdm. Sun Baohong and Chief Director of the Ministry of Energy of Ghana Thomas Mba Akabzaa signed a certificate on the handover of the goods granted by the National Development and Reform Commission of China to the Ministry of Energy of Ghana.
According to the Memorandum of Understanding on Granting of Goods for Addressing Climate Change signed by the National Development and Reform Commission of China and the Ministry of Energy of Ghana, China provided 1,000 sets of inverter air conditioners, 2,000 sets of solar home systems and 500 sets of LED solar street lights to the Ghanaian government in three batches.
Ambassador Sun Baohong pointed out in her speech that, as a responsible developing country, the Chinese government attaches great importance to addressing climate change and has taken concrete measures to develop green and low-carbon economy. She hoped these goods would help Ghana improve its ability to address climate change. Ambassador Sun stressed that the two countries had conducted fruitful cooperation in the area of energy in recent years. The Bui Hydropower project and other projects are playing an important role in improving power supply in Ghana. The training of Ghanaian officials and engineering technicians in the field of energy by China has yielded positive results. The Chinese side is willing to continue our cooperation in this regard.
Chief Director Thomas Mba Akabzaa expressed his gratitude for the selfless assistance of the Chinese government on behalf of the Ministry of Energy of Ghana. He said that these goods would play a significant role in enhancing Ghana's ability to research and develop in renewable energy, energy conservation, environmental protection and addressing climate change. He also expressed his gratitude to the Chinese government for its great contribution to the human resources building in the Ghanaian energy sector in the past years. He hoped that the cooperation between the two countries in the field of energy will achieve more fruitful results and benefit the Ghanaian people.
After the ceremony, Ambassador Sun held talks with Deputy Minister of Energy Hon. William Owuraku Aidoo at his invitation. Both sides had an in-depth exchanges of views on bilateral cooperation in the energy sector.
