$4 million Pharmaceutical Joint Venture Inaugurated

On June 8th, 2005, the Dan Adams Pharmaceuticals (Gh) Ltd, a joint venture between Adams Pharmaceutical (Anhui) Co. Ltd of China and Danpong Pharmaceuticals Ghana Ltd, was inaugurated in Accra. Present at the event were H.E. President John Agyekum Kufuor; H.E. Zhang Keyuan, Chinese Ambassador to Ghana; Hon. Courage Quashigah, Minister of Health; Hon. Kwamena Bartels, Minister of Private Sector Development & PSI and the delegation of the Xuancheng Municipal Government, Anhui Province, China.

H.E. Zhang Keyuan extended warm congratulations to the inauguration of the enterprise and expressed gratification with the expansion of investment in Ghana from China, saying that the successful commissioning of the first China-Ghana pharmaceutical joint venture would broaden mutually beneficial cooperation between the two countries. The Ambassador added that the Adams Pharmaceutical (Anhui) Co. Ltd had done a very good service to the Ghanaians, which would help relieve the shortage of some much needed medicines here in Ghana.

The President spoke highly of Ghana-China relations and commended the pioneering spirit of the two enterprises, observing that grown Chinese investment in Ghana has enhanced the self-reliance capacity of the Ghanaians.

The investment totals $4 million with the Chinese company holding 65% of its shares and its Ghanaian partner 35%. This new pharmaceutical company is the first one in Ghana to produce anti-retroviral and anti-malaria drugs for both the local and international markets.
